The Oceana County Jail traces its origins back to the establishment of Oceana County in 1831. Initially, prisoners were held in a small log cabin in the county seat of Pentwater. As the county's population grew, so did the need for a dedicated jail facility.

In 1855, the county constructed a new jail building in Hart, the county's second seat. The new jail was a two-story brick structure with eight cells. It served as the primary holding facility for Oceana County prisoners for over 50 years.

Expansion and Modernization

In 1912, the jail underwent a significant expansion and renovation. The original eight cells were enlarged and a new wing was added, increasing the capacity to 24 inmates. The jail also received modern conveniences such as plumbing and electricity.

In 1967, a new jail facility was constructed on Shelby Avenue in Hart to meet the growing needs of the county. The new jail was a state-of-the-art facility with 48 cells, a medical unit, and a separate female housing area.

Controversies and Reforms

Over the years, the Oceana County Jail has been the subject of several controversies and reforms. In the 1970s, the jail was overcrowded and understaffed, leading to concerns about inmate safety and civil rights.

In response to these concerns, the county undertook a series of reforms in the 1980s. These reforms included hiring additional staff, improving inmate living conditions, and implementing a comprehensive inmate grievance system.

Recent Developments

In 2015, the Oceana County Jail underwent a major renovation and expansion. The renovation included a new secure entrance, an expanded medical unit, and additional housing space. The jail's capacity was increased to 60 inmates.

In 2019, the Oceana County Sheriff's Office implemented a new electronic monitoring program. The program allows certain low-risk inmates to serve their sentences under house arrest while being monitored by GPS technology.

Current Status

Today, the Oceana County Jail is a modern and well-run facility that provides a safe environment for inmates and staff alike. The jail is committed to providing humane conditions and promoting the rehabilitation of offenders.
